Dar es Salaam faces a shortage of 16,000 desks for primary schools

THE Ilala Municipality in Dar es Salaam faces a shortage of 16,000 desks for primary schools with Kinyerezi Ward lacking 432 desks, the Ilala District Commissioner (DC) Raymond Mushi, revealed.
“I call upon stakeholders to support the Municipality to provide the desks for our schools. The other problem we are facing is shortage of classrooms,” the DC stated.
The DC made the remarks during an occasion at which Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) handed over 7.4m/- for the purchase of 62 school desks for Zimbili Primary School in Kinyerezi.
He hailed TPDC for the support and requested it to provide additional 376 desks to curb the shortage in Kinyerezi Ward.
He also challenged the school administration to ensure that the support translated to improved performance. At the same occasion, the TPDC Manager for Communications, Ms Maria Mselemu, said the donation was part of the corporation’s social corporate responsibility across the country.

“TPDC has supported various sectors of the economy such as water and education. The donation today is aimed at supporting President John Magufuli’s efforts on free education and ensuring that all students have school desks and tables,” she remarked.

Zimbili Primary School, according to head teacher Sabitina Msuya, has 640 pupils from pre-school to Standard Four.

The school was established in 2014 with 163 students. She was glad that the donation would enable all pupils to sit on desks, noting on the other hand, that the school lacks an administration block to accommodate the head teacher and other members of staff.

There is also a lack of electricity and water in addition to computers and photocopier machines.
