DRIVERS in Dar es Salaam have been warned against using the Bus Rapid Transit special trunk roads.

DRIVERS in Dar es Salaam have been warned against using the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) special trunk roads. Speaking to journalists yesterday, a spokesperson for the company said the firm is currently making trial runs.
The spokesperson, Mr Sabri Maburuki said: “People should respect BRT trunk roads or rather refrain from using them without authority.
“People should avoid accidents by staying away and facilitate smooth running of the project.” The interim period of the project is expected to start on May 10th this year.
Drivers are now practising ready for the commencement of the project. Mr Maburuki said despite the ban on the use of the project’s roads, some drivers still use them during this practising period and cause operational challenges.
“The project’s infrastructure was set up for every user. People should respect that,” he cautioned.
Giving an example, he said already four BRT buses have been affected after colliding with other motorists who defied the rules and forcefully passed on the trunk roads.
“Rules and regulations guiding BRT roads are similar to those of railways. Anyone colliding with our buses will be punished no matter who caused the accident,” he said.
He said the project has qualified drivers and all buses are already insured. The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) is about to announce fares to be used by BRT buses.
He said special cameras have been installed to monitor people with bad intentions to destroy BRT infrastructure.
It is anticipated that by 2025, Dar es Salaam will have 11.5 million citizens and this according to experts calls for serious infrastructure improvement.
Ongoing phase one works of the BRT project envisions reducing traffic jams and congestion at Dar es Salaam City.
