President John Magufuli praised over fight on graft in public offices

TANZANIA Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) has commended President John Magufuli for his graft-fighting drive.The Coalition’s National Coordinator, Mr Onesmo Olengurumwa, showered the praise calling the Head of State to intensify the fight and weed out all crooked officials in public offices. He appealed to all citizens to join hands with the government to ensure ethics and discipline in government offices is restored.
Mr Olengurumwa was in Dar es Salaam at an event to mark third THDRC’s anniversary.
The event was attended by various human rights activists from within and outside Tanzania. “We are happy with the president’s efforts in restoring discipline and ethics in public offices. This convinces us that good governance will be highly exercised,” he noted.
The event also dedicated to awarding a number of activists who have dedicated themselves in promoting and protecting the rights of other despite being threatened, attacked and harassed.
They awarded a Simiyu based journalist, Happy Mollel, for reporting on human rights issues. Another Tanzanian awarded was George Mgoba, chairman of graduates from National Service (JKT) who was involved in lobbying and negotiation with the government in creating a sound employment environment for graduates of National Service last year.
The award was handed over to his wife ,Maria Mgoba, on his behalf as he is still languishing in custody with five colleagues, who were charged of unlawful assembly, last year.
“Mgoba is still in custody at present while he continues to receive medical support under THRDC support,” Maria said emotionally and appealed to the government to release her husband because he is ill.
Mgoba disappeared on February 2 last year and later reported to have been found abandoned unconscious on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam city near Kibaha in Coast Region where he was later admitted to Tumbi Hospital for medical treatment.

On her side, a Simiyu based journalist, Ms Happy Mollel, said she feels joyful to be awarded for her works because it stimulates her to go on with the fights of defending human rights. “I urge the public and the government to join hands in defending human rights in the country,” she said.
