This follows concerns over dilapidated state of government health facilities in the country.
Mr Elioda Tumwesigye, the minister of Health, while speaking at the World Malaria Day celebrations
at Golf Course, Lira District, on Monday confirmed the development.
He said the facilities will be upgraded to ensure Ugandans get access to quality service delivery.
“The president has directed that all districts should have hospitals and mortuaries,” he said, adding
that his ministry would include the fund for the redevelopment of activities in the next financial
year’s budget.
The minister also used the same function to officially launch the use of a new longlasting
insecticide, Actellic 300CS that is being used to fight insecticide resistant mosquitoes.
Actellic, which lasts six to seven months, has replaced bendiocarb, an insecticide which has been in
use for several years in the country.
The Ministry of Health chose to use actellic after bendiocarb failed to eliminate mosquitoes that
transmit malaria.
Mr Tumwesigye further promised to lobby for fund to construct a modern maternity ward at Lira
Regional Referral Hospital. Poor budget support, dilapidated buildings, a lack of adequate
equipment and medical supplies characterise majority of Uganda’s health centres.
A tour of the health facilities in Apac, Lira and Kole districts by this newspaper reveals dilapidated
ceilings, leaking roofs, broken window panes, a dusty labour ward and a crowded operating room.
Like most other health centres, there are inadequate drugs and equipment and personnel to attend
to all the patients. (NMG)
