Zanzibar ,CCM reaches out to floods, cholera victims in Isles

Speaking during the handing of the donations yesterday in Mwanakwerekwe C and Chumbuni camps, CCM (Zanzibar) Ideology and Publicity Secretary, Waride Bakari Jabu said the ruling party as an institution was deeply touched by the tragic events facing the people and saw a need to support them. She said the unpleasant situation keeps getting worse as the number of flood victims and cholera patients has been increasing due to the ongoing rains.
According to her, more than 400 people have been taken to Mwanakwerekwe C camp for humanitarian aid.
“We would like to express our condolences to families that have lost their loved ones in the tragic events and call on them to relocate from valleys and flood-prone areas to avoid more disasters,” she said.
Some of the items donated in both camps include 280 cartons of drinking water, baby pampers, washing soaps, bathing soaps, exercise books, toilet cleaners, chlorine, sprayer pipes, rain boots and washing equipment.

She also took time to call on the public to adhere to good hygiene practices to combat the spread of cholera.
Jabu appealed for support from other stakeholders to assist government’s efforts in curbing the disease by donating aid to victims.

Receiving the donation, Permanent Secretary (Second Vice President’s Office), Joseph Abdallah Meza thanked CCM for their donation and promised that they will be used for the targeted purpose.

“The aid has come at a right time to help those affected as their numbers keep increasing,” he said, adding that the situation is getting worse.

Chumbuni isolation area camp manager, Dr Ramadhani Mikidadi Suleiman said the increasing number of cholera patients in the Isles has prompted the government to deploy more health experts.

He, however, mentioned lack of equipment has one of the major challenges hindering smooth operations at the camp.
He also said at least 2,026 cholera cases have been reported in the camp since the disease broke out in September last. Suleiman stressed that they had received 56 patients yesterday.
