The killing of the five people brings the death toll from the raging floods to a total of 13

The killing of the five people brings the death toll from the raging floods to a total of 13 in just one week. The other eight were killed in the northern region of Kilimanjaro where hundreds others have been rendered homeless.
Briefing reporters here over the weekend, Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Dr Kebwe Steven said four people drowned while crossing a river and a taxi driver drowned after his car was also washed away by the raging river.
He said the impact of the rains in the region started between April 15 and 24, this year; “the floods have left 13,933 homeless, and swept away 315 houses across four districts of Kilosa, Morogoro Rural, Kilombero and Malinyi,” he said.
“More than 3,000 households have been affected and 12,073 hectares of farms have been destroyed leaving residents in the affected areas without food and other basic necessities,” he detailed.
“In Kilosa, five villages and 1,238 households have been affected, and some 4,765 people are now homeless,” he added.

In Morogoro District Council, 14 villages in Serembala, Mvuha, Tununguo and Mkulazi wards have been affected and some 8,795 people are displaced.

“We are seeking humanitarian support from various stakeholders. Humanitarian aid is very important at this time because the victims don’t have shelter, food and drugs,” he lamented.

On the bright side, Kebwe said regional authorities have brought some relief supplies including six tonnes of maize, two tonnes of beans and 400 litres of cooking oil; “the supplies have already been distributed to the victims,” he summed up.

Morogoro is among ten regions across the country that the Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) had forecasted will be hit hard by the heavy El Nino downpours and floods.
