Taifa Stars renew a race for place in AFCON finals by playing a friendly match against Kenya Harambee Stars

TANZANIA national soccer team, Taifa Stars renew a race for place in AFCON finals by playing a friendly match against Kenya Harambee Stars in Nairobi on May 29th, Stars who are sponsored by Kilimanjaro Premium Lager are scheduled to play tough Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against African giants Egypt and Nigeria.The friendly is crucial for teams as it will drill players of both sides in their tough continental ties.
In its press announcement yesterday, Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) said the match comes after talks with the Federation of the Kenyan Football (FKF) to have a friendly encounter to drill players as well as giving coaches opportunities to note weaknesses in the teams. Both teams are lowly placed in their groups.
While Taifa Stars are third behind leaders Egypt and Nigeria with only a point, they are goal-less while they have thrice allowed the ball behind the net.
Egypt are in a pole position with 7 points, 5 goals for and one against. Second-placed Nigeria have two points, they have scored one goal and conceded two.
Taifa Stars under Charles Boniface Mkwasa are expected to start a camp in May soon after the end of the league season. Stars host Egypt on June 4 at the National Stadium, a match that will decide Tanzania’s fate in the race for AFCON ticket.
Kenya’s Harambee Stars who are bottom-placed in their Group E, have only notched 1 point after playing four matches, no win, three losses and a draw.
Guinea-Bissau, who lead the group have collected 7 points from two wins, one draw and a loss. Congo are second are second with 6 points while Zambia also with 6 points are standing third.
Kenya and Tanzania have met five times recently and the two countries have equaled with number of wins, draw and losses. Tanzania has won twice, drew once and lost twice, the same as Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
Taifa Stars won 1-0 in their last friendly held at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza in 2013. Harambe Stars won 2-1 in 2009 while Taifa Stars won their 2007 encounter 2-1.
The worst defeat from Kenyans was in 2003 when Stars suffered a 3-0 loss.
